GREG MELVILLE

GREG MELVILLE is an author and adventure journalist whose writing has appeared in Outside, National Geographic Traveler, Slate, and The New York Times, among other top national outlets.

His book Over My Dead Body: Unearthing the Hidden History of America's Cemeteries was called “astonishing” and “powerful" by The New York Times Book Review, which praised it for providing “a new way to think about death, not a the final chapter but as a window onto life in America.” His earlier book, the environmental travelogue Greasy Rider, was the "campus common read" for six colleges and universities and named by the American Library Association one of the top 100 "Outstanding Books for the College Bound" of the decade.

His upcoming book, In Search of Ancient Trees: A Wayward Quest for America's Oldest Living Things, follows Melville on a cross-country hunt for the last of America's ancient trees. It publishes in March 2027.

Melville has served as an editor at Men's Journal, Sports Afield, and Footwear News, and as a crime reporter for a daily newspaper in Northern Virginia. He is a Navy veteran, has deployed to Afghanistan, written speeches for top military officials, and taught English at the U.S. Naval Academy, where he received the school's Apgar Award for Teaching Excellence in 2019.

Born and raised in the Boston area, he now lives with his wife and two kids in Delaware.
